3/27/11 update:
I wrote this review 1/29. Lights still going strong and shoes still in one piece after lots of jumping/stamping/playground play. So very still happy! We bought these shoes (this and a similar one) for my three year old twins. They arrived on a day that they had 101 fevers, and they still came out of their sick fog to shriek with joy, dance/run around the house, jump. They are the happiest kids that I have ever seen.
Now I know based on my experience with previous light up skechers and reading reviews that the batteries will run out at some point. My personal opinion is that this is not surprising, and I'm not sure why people get so upset (except we do not like our children to be disappointed and I am the same). If this is like the last shoes, by the time that happens this novelty will wear have worn off and they will barely notice. The last ones, first one shoe died, then the other, and they still had some intermittent activity so we will see if this is the same.
Conversely, based on my experience of shopping for similar shoes at Kohl's, if you get an old batch the batteries are nearly dead by the time you buy them. It that had happened, I would have been quite upset. But these were shipped out by Bealls, obviously never opened and the light burning bright, so were fresh shoes (which you are not guaranteed when buying on the internet) I do not think that they had been sitting in a warehouse forever. So I applaud Bealls for the quality.
And when the lights run out, these are actually quite durable, good looking shoes that fit well. We had to buy them to replace some stride rite slimers that wore out before they outgrew them, and never fit snugly on their feet.
So to be honest, even if the lights burn out this week, the sheer happiness that they have caused will warrant the $$.
As a side note: these shoes come with a DVD for a cartoon Zevo 3, which is some cartoon that they've come up to sell the shoes. Anyhoo, they also LOVE this. They love superheros etc. It is rank capitalism at its best. It is also fairly harmless. In my opinion, you are not going to avoid ads (is this any different from Dora or Mickey mouse product selling) in the United States, so the best thing you can do is to teach your children how to resist them. Just like you need to teach them that a happy meal on a special occasion is great and fun, a happy meal three times a week is sheer nutritional idiocy on the part of the parents-grow up people, don't ask the goverment to solve all your problems to make laws to prevent you from overeating. Just my soapbox for the day. But if you disagree and still want the shoes, may want to hide the dvd from them.
